On a recent trip to Boston, a billboard from a popular car dealership caught my
attention. The reason it did was because the dealership stated that they were
eliminating everything you dislike about buying a car.
It made me think about how similar buying a car is to purchasing insurance.
Whether you are purchasing auto, home, health or life insurance, there are
aspects of the process that may be displeasing to you. It is also my understanding
that many people are just plain afraid of the process of purchasing an insurance
plan. To help me understand how a potential client may feel about purchasing
insurance, I asked fellow business professionals what they dislike most about
buying insurance. The following topics came up:
1. We pay a monthly premium for something we may never use and/or need
2. Rates will go up every year
3. People in sales will force and/or scare you into purchasing a plan
4. You don’t know if you can trust them
5. They sell you a product that is not in the client’s best interest
6. Health Insurance doesn’t cover holistic medicine such as accupuncture
In the next few months, it is my goal to help take the fear out of buying insurance
for you. This will be done by addressing each of the topics that were just
described.
As an insurance broker, I look at insurance as a means of risk minimization. You
take a risk each time you drive your car so you minimize that risk by purchasing
insurance for your car. To be honest, I would rather that clients never use their
policies. Using their health care plan would mean that someone was sick, fighting
a disease, or injured. Using their life insurance plan would mean that someone
has lost their life. I would much rather you have an insurance plan and not need
it than need it and not have it. I know the monthly premiums for insurance plans
can be costly and I understand the frustration of having a tight budget. My
